Democracy in action - TN 2006
The 'Kudavolai' system was practised as far back as 900 AD by the Cholas according to inscriptions on the walls of the Vaikunta Perumal temple in Uttiramerur. Common people chose their leaders by writing names of people on palm leaves or 'olai' and dropping them in a big pot or 'kudam'. This was the first recorded instance of 'free and fair elections'. Elections are the most poignant manifestation of democracy in action and this blog looks at the working of the same in Tamilnadu.
